How to choose a golf hitting mat for home practice
A golf hitting mat is the first piece of training equipment most golfers buy, and the one they use the most. Get it right and a garage becomes a range. Get it wrong and the club bounces, the wrists ache and the mat ends up behind the lawnmower.
Here is how we choose, in the order that matters: the turf, the backing, the size, the tees, and whether the mat should give feedback on your swing path.

1. Start with the turf
Turf height decides how the club behaves. Short, dense turf around 16 mm lets the sole brush through the way it does on a mown fairway. Long, soft turf hides fat shots: the club slides under the ball and the strike feels better than it was.
If you want to practise from different lies, a multi-turf mat with a rough strip and a tee strip lets you rehearse the shots you actually face.

2. Check the backing
A heavy rubber backing does two jobs: it keeps the mat flat and still on a smooth floor, and it absorbs the shock of a heavy strike before it reaches your wrists. Lightweight foam mats slide and curl at the edges.
Look at how the turf is bonded to the backing. Our tri-turf mat uses a solid adhesive layer so the edges stay down after months of swings.

3. Pick the size for your space
A 13" x 17" mat fits in front of most nets and simulator screens. If you want to stand on the same surface as the ball, step up to a 16" x 25" alignment mat: your feet stay level with the ball and the alignment marks give you a target line.

4. Decide whether you want feedback
Impact mats leave a mark of the club path on the fabric. That single line tells you whether you swing out-to-in, in-to-out or bottom out early, which is the most useful feedback you can get without a launch monitor.
They also travel: the 8" x 17" version slides into a range bag.

The short version
Whatever you choose, use it often. Ten minutes on a mat most evenings beats a two-hour range session once a month, and a good mat makes those ten minutes feel like golf.
